The Owls sacked boss Garry Monk on Monday night with the Hillsborough club second from bottom of the Championship after 11 games.

Cook, 53, has been out of a job since resigning from Wigan Athletic in the summer after the Lancashire club plunged into administration and were relegated to League One following a points deduction.

Cook, who led Town to the League Two title in 2014 and the League One play-offs the following season, is one of the frontrunners for the job with most bookmakers but other candidates include Tony Pulis, David Wagner and Nigel Pearson.

As well as his success with the Spireites, Cook has won promotions with Wigan and Portsmouth.
