In-form O'Shea dreaming of Premier League encounter

Jay O'Shea is desperate to help Chesterfield progress in the FA Cup on Saturday and be in with a chance of taking on some Premier League stars.

Town’s creative attacker says the prospect of a visit to one of the country’s biggest clubs is the key to the old competition’s magic, ahead of the second round clash with League Two Wycombe Wanderers.

Saturday’s visitors will arrive on the back of a four-game winning streak, but face a Spireites side who have won back-to-back League One fixtures.

O’Shea hopes those wins have signalled a big change in Town’s fortunes.

“I feel we’ve turned a corner, we’ve won four games including cup games and before that we hadn’t won a game for a long time,” he said.

“Hopefully we’ve turned a corner.

“The boys are buzzing in the dressing room, two wins on the trot in the league, we’ll be hoping to continue the form now and not look back to the bad results before.

“I’ve been here a long time now and I’ve played a lot of games. Looking around the dressing room we’ve got a few young lads in there, so you have to step up as a senior player.

“I feel like the lads are doing that and the young lads are as well and everyone’s coming together.”

The Irishman is in a rich vein of form himself, a deft header and a sublime free-kick against Bristol Rovers last weekend making it six goals in six games.

Ian Evatt called O’Shea’s headed goal a rarity but as it turns out the free-kick was even more unique.

“It’s probably up there in my best finishes, top three I would say.

“I’ve never scored a free-kick in England, the last one I scored was in Galway in Ireland so I’m delighted with that.

“I think back in Ireland I probably had a run like this (six in six) but hopefully I can keep it going, keep scoring and get the team up the table.”

The 28-year-old has hit his stride at just the right time for the Spireites, who were in desperate need of points before the wins over MK Dons and Bristol Rovers.

And now attention turns to the FA Cup, with excitement growing for O’Shea and his team-mates.

“I look forward to every game and especially the second round of the FA Cup,” he said.

“Everyone looks forward to that because if you win that you’re looking at hopefully pulling out a Premier League club.

“All of us dream of playing against those teams in a big stadium so that’s why we look forward to it.”

And although Saturday’s opponents are from the division below, he won’t mind one bit if Chesterfield scrape through the tie.

“All we want is to be in the hat for the third round and then everyone can get excited to see if we can pull out one of the top teams.”
