Five (yes five) positives from last night's defeat by Fleetwood

Despite Chesterfield having more than enough chances to win the game and hitting the post and crossbar, Town were booed by a section of the Proact crowd and social media reaction since the game suggests that not many supporters agreed with Wilson’s positivity.

But there were positives to take from the evening. Five of them, no less.

And here they are...

1. He’s what? He’s on the bench? But I thought...

Yes, Ched Evans returned to action after that ‘unusual’ injury, after his appearance at Cardiff Crown Court and despite there being no timescale for his return just 24 hours before the game.

The striker had a fitness test on Tuesday morning and either the club were pleasantly surprised by the result or there was a bit of a bluff going on before Fleetwood arrived.

Either way, he not only lifted the crowd but his team-mates’ performances as well, Town looking so much more dangerous with him on the pitch.

Get him fit again and he’ll be banging them in once more. And how Chesterfield need that.

Paul McGinn is a welcome returnee as well, an actual right-back actually playing at right-back.

2. Can we see your birth certificate please Ricardo?

Ricky German is a man masquerading as a boy. The 17-year-old looks ridiculously strong for his age, giving experienced League One defenders the brush off and going shoulder to shoulder with much taller men.

The only thing louder than the cheer that will go up when Evans next hits the net is the roar that will greet German’s first goal as a professional player.

At 17 he’s a great prospect for the Spireites and in Danny Wilson he has a manager who knows how to look after him and develop his talent.

Here’s to a bright future.

3. Gboly Ariyibi remembered he’s really quick

The winger hasn’t shown the form that attracted all those clubs during the transfer window, not since it shut, certainly not on any kind of consistent basis.

But the mark of his performance, second half certainly, was the yellow cards shown to both of his markers on the right wing.

At times it’s like he realises, ‘actually I’m a lot faster than this guy’ and from that moment decides to give the left-back a nightmare.

He badly needs a goal and if he gets one it might just take the weight off the youngster’s shoulders and allow him to play with the confidence he showed in pre-season and in the initial games.

4. The unflappable Sam Hird

Where would the Spireites be without this man? Cool, calm and composed. Rarely makes a mistake, looked good on and off the ball last night and was so unlucky not to score.

In a young squad he exudes leadership and gives the inexperienced players around him an example to follow.

If it’s frustrating him, playing pretty well and losing because others make errors, he does well to hide it. Always fronts up for media duties when asked, too, and isn’t afraid to share his opinion.

5. The margins, they are fine

Of Chesterfield’s seven league defeats, six of them have been by a single goal.

There’s not been a lot in it in so many games.

Maybe, just maybe, with Evans and McGinn back, if Ariyibi plays well more often and if Sam Hird remains a rock, maybe those 1-0 defeats will become 1-1 draws and 2-1 wins.

The alternative is unthinkable and it’s far too early to think it anyway.
