FC Britannia seal treble with Alma Cup victory

A 3-1 win over Clowne Wanderers saw Brit add the Alma trophy to the NAPIT Division One and Derbyshire Sunday Senior Cup successes this season.

Brit were fast out of the blocks and found themselves three goals to the good at half-time. The warning signs were there from the off for Clowne as Jez Mitchell and Nathan Whitehead went close.

The breakthrough soon came for Brit on the 15 minute mark through Callum Lytham’s improvisation. Lytham spotted Clowne keeper Gareth Briggs off his line and hit a glorious strike from 35 yards that nestled in the back of the net.

Wonder strikes were in evidence when Brit went two up when Briggs had been penalised for handling the ball outside of his area and Alex Hewitt stepped up to strike home the sweetest of free kicks from 20 yards.

A goalmouth scramble gave Clowne the chance to grab a goal back but Michal Smy twice saw his efforts blocked as did Sam Richardson’s follow up, as the Brit defence stood firm.

Clowne would rue those missed chances. Brit got a third moments before the break as Lytham set up Mitchell to smash in a volley from 10 yards to put the game beyond Clowne.

Clowne came out for the second half in determined fashion, getting a deserved consolation. David Hall sweeping the ball in from inside the penalty area but the damage had been done in the first 45 minutes, as Brit clinched a triple crown.
