Evatt returns to his roots looking for first win over hometown club

Evatt hopes to form part of the Chesterfield defence at the Ricoh, in front of his parents, as the Spireites aim to snap a five-game run of League One defeats.

The centre-half returned to Town’s starting line-up at Charlton on Saturday, just in time to put himself in contention for Danny Wilson’s plans in what is a special fixture for the Evatt family.

“It’s nice, being a born and bred Coventry lad,” he said.

“I used to go to Highfield Road and watch them play. I’ve never won at Highfield or the Ricoh so hopefully I can change that tomorrow night.”

Coventry are unbeaten at home in 10 outings and having turned their form around in recent weeks, will provide a stiff test for the Spireites.

“All records are there to be broken,” said Evatt.

“It would be nice for me to go there and win because my parents will be there, supporting me, but we were Coventry fans growing up.

“It will be nice to put a smile on our supporters’ faces and hopefully my mum and dad’s.

“(But) we know they’re another big club in this division, they’re always hard to beat at home.”

The Sky Blues have had a tough time of it on and off the field in recent years and local lad Evatt would like to see them get back to where they were – although obviously not at the expense of his current club.

He believes Coventry shouldn’t have left their former ground Highfield Road when they did.

“It’s not just them, my old club Blackpool is the same,” he said.

“It’s scary how such bad decisions made off the pitch can have an affect on clubs for so long.

“I think Coventry sold Highfield Road at the wrong time, for a housing estate and didn’t build their own ground. Relying on other people to rent the stadium off is never going to be good news. It was a horrendous decision for not only the club but the city in general.

“It’s a well supported club but fans have lost faith in the club and when that happens there’s only one way you’re going to go and that’s down.

“They need to turn it around fast.

“It would be nice to see them pick it up again but obviously not tomorrow night.”
