The 17-year-old made his first team debut as a substitute in the League One defeat at Scunthorpe United in April.

Delighted to sign a pro deal, Wakefield said: “It’s a dream come true as I’ve always wanted to get a professional contract, but it’s only the start and I’ve got to keep working hard to impress in pre-season.”

He played just five minutes in that game and is a product of the Spirietes academy, who can operate in defence or midfield.

“Charlie is a tenacious player who has a lot of potential,” said academy manager Mark Smith. “He’s far from the finished article but he’s shown enough to earn a contract.

“This shows once again how much the academy is being supported by the club, which is great to see.

“It makes my job easier when it comes to attracting youngsters to Chesterfield as the players and their parents can see how many academy graduates have been given contracts.”
