'˜Don't leave it up to Ched and Gboly,' says Wilson

Danny Wilson says his players can't delegate all the responsibility for goalscoring and creativity to Ched Evans and Gboly Ariyibi.

Evans and Ariyibi were two players who came close to scoring on Saturday in the defeat by Scunthorpe.

But Town were unable to find the net for the fourth consecutive outing, and Wilson admits it’s a concern ahead of the trip to Charlton Athletic.

“We’ve not scored now for four games and that’s a concern for me. It’s a team concern,” he said.

“We look at Gboly and Ched and maybe one or two look at them and think ‘win the game for us.’ I won’t accept that as an attitude.

“I think that’s wrong, it’s not a team ethic, it’s about everyone creating and contributing to chances, scoring. There’s not enough doing that.”

Wilson has been critical of his experienced players at times this season and questioned their willingness to put their bodies on the line and make brave decisions last weekend.

“The big players, the older players, the senior players have got to stand up and be men,” he said.

“They’ve got to go out there, whatever game they’re playing, and take the game by the scruff of the neck.

“It’s not looking round at other people, it’s looking at themselves.

“We need to provoke one or two performances for the next couple of weeks.

“I’m not going to make an excuse for it, we’ve got to put players out there who will put their bodies on the line.”

The Chesterfield boss opted not to name the players who disappointed him in the 3-0 loss last Saturday, and hopes he can inspire them to an improved display at The Valley this weekend.

He said: “I could go from one to 11 and tell you who didn’t do certain things, but it’s about the team thing.

“As a group we’ve got to think about it and provoke a performance and get us into a positive state of mind so we can try and get a result.”

A big part of Chesterfield’s game preparation this week was to try and get as many players fit as possible for the trip to south-east London.

It’s unlikely that right-back Paul McGinn will be available after re-injuring his hamstring and a question mark will remain over the fitness of striker Kristian Dennis.

Centre-half Tom Anderson picked up his fifth booking of the season on Saturday and will miss the Charlton Athletic game through suspension.

His absence gives veteran defender Ian Evatt a chance to come back into the starting line-up for the first time in League One since 3rd September.

Wilson said: “The biggest thing from my point of view is to get everyone fit.

“Yes Evo is there and he will be called upon.”
