On this day...Spireites hold Stoke, rout Swansea, lose in front of Star Trek actor

On this day in history, Chesterfield have held Stoke to a draw, hammered Swansea City and lost in front of an acting legend.

Two years ago Newport County were the visitors to the Proact, and Jimmy Ryan scored in a 1-1 draw in front of 5,659.

In 2010, the Spireites were beaten 3-1 at Barnet, despite Wade Small controversially firing the visitors in front when referee Jarnail Singh overruled assistant referee Neil Hair, who was flagging for offside.

Two years prior to that, Chesterfield won 4-1 at home to Shrewsbury, David Dowson and Jamie Ward both scoring twice in the rout.

Huddersfield Town provided the opposition in 2003, and were 4-0 victors over the Spireites to drag themselves off the bottom of Division Two in front of their most famous fan - Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart.

The 1999 visit of Stoke City yielded a point for Chesterfield, after a 1-1 draw.

Stoke went on to finish directly above the Spireites in eighth place in Division Two, with a five point cushion.

In 1997 Chesterfield were held 2-2 at home by Gillingham at Saltergate and were one week away from FA Cup heroics against Middlesbrough.

Swansea City were sent home on the wrong end of a 4-1 beating in 1986, and six years earlier, in the midst of a six-game unbeaten run, Chesterfield ran out 2-0 winners over Carlisle United at Brunton Park.

Watford were the opposition in 1975, and Chesterfield played out a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road, against a side who would be relegated from the Third Division come the end of the season.

One year earlier, the Spireites beat Southend United 3-1 at Roots Hall and in 1972 they had a goalless draw with AFC Bournemouth at home.

In 1969 there was another goalless stalemate, this time with Doncaster Rovers at Belle Vue, and Chesterfield beat Torquay United 2-1 at home in 1965.

The Spireites were 2-1 winners against Crewe at Gresty Road in 1958, just 24 hours after they beat Chester by the same scoreline at Saltergate.

Darlington beat Chesterfield 3-0 at Feethams in 1952, and drew 1-1 with Burnley in 1947, the year they finished fourth in the Second Division.
