The 5-1 triumph at home to mid-table Appleby Frodingham kept the Millers nine points behind leaders Harworth with three games to play.

They are due to travel to Collingham on Wednesday night before entertaining Harworth, which is the top dogs’ only remaining fixture, in a crunch clash on Saturday.

Even if Clay Cross win all three, they are not guaranteed to be champions because Harworth’s goal difference (plus-83) is currently 15 goals superior.

A chip from Lee Clay over the advancing Jordan Quibell started the rout against Scunthorpe-based Appleby on 34 minutes, and this was quickly followed by a Josh Scully free-kick that deceived the visiting defenders.

Clay had a simple tap-in to take the Millers into a comfortable lead at the break and shortly after the restart, Josh Parfitt made it 4-0.

Harry Burnett-Haynes pulled one back for Appleby with 20 minutes remaining before Parfitt ensured that there was no late upset on the cards by drilling in number five for the Millers six minutes from the end.
