Former Brighton, Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday frontman Chris O’Grady has penned a two-year deal at the Proact.

The Spireites have chased him for a number of weeks and at one stage looked to be out of the running.

But club director Ashley Carson confirmed the deal this morning.

A 21-goal season for Barnsley earned O’Grady a move to Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2014.

He spent time on loan with Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion before his release by Brighton this summer.

O’Grady has featured against the Spireites for the likes of Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday and Rochdale, for whom he scored in a November 2009 3-2 victory.

He’s up for the challenge of helping Town to escape League Two next season.

“It’s the type of club and the type of project that is just perfect for me,” he said.

“The objective is to get the club back to where it belongs, in League One.

“I just want to enjoy my football and I’m thankful for the opportunity. I had other offers but Chesterfield were the first to come in for me and it just felt right. For the club to reach out to me and make it clear that they wanted me meant a lot.”

Carson revealed that the move is a significant one, financially, for the club.

“This probably represents the biggest financial outlay on a player in the history of the club. The signing of a player of this calibre is a real statement of intent.

“We have pulled out all the stops to sign Chris and I’d like to thank the owner, Dave Allen, for providing the necessary financial support to enable us to do the deal.

“We have other transfer targets in mind, but much will depend on season ticket sales. I would urge supporters who have been thinking about buying a season ticket to do so in order to enable us to bring in further quality players.”
