Liverpool-born Whelan, 24, helped the Terras to promotion to the National League last season and has scored three goals in seven appearances so far this campaign.

He played against the Spireites for Weymouth on Saturday.

He and fellow new signing Jak McCourt were on the bench for Tuesday night’s match against Aldershot Town and both came on in the second half.

Whelan was said to be a ‘standout player’ for Southern League Premier South side Salisbury before signing for Yeovil in July 2019 after impressing during a trial.

Before signing for the Glovers, Whelan had a trial at Bury and arrived at Huish Park with a ‘glowing report from staff at Gigg Lane’.

Whelan joins striker Akwasi Asante and midfielder McCourt in signing for Town in the last few days.

In a statement Weymouth said: “Weymouth Football Club can confirm that we today received an offer for the transfer of Tom Whelan from Chesterfield.

“The board of Weymouth Football Club have reluctantly accepted the offer involving an undisclosed sum.

“The deal, which suits all parties involved, allows Tom to move closer to his home and play full-time football, something which he had been craving.

“We wish Tom well for the future and would like to thank him for his time at the club, from his initial loan spell midway through last season, to signing in the summer and playing his part in our successful Vanarama National League South promotion campaign.”
