Chesterfield: Little time for Spireites boss Wilson after Morsy exit

With the transfer window closing on Monday, the midfielder has left for Wigan Athletic, leaving Spireites boss Danny Wilson minimal time to fill the huge void left by his skipper.

It’s believed Chesterfield will receive around £200,000 from their League One rivals for the former Port Vale man, who was voted the Spireites’ Player of the Year in his first season.

Central midfield is a worry for a Morsy-free squad.

Chris Herd has been Morsy’s most regular partner of late, but he’s had a couple of niggling injuries.

Angel Martinez remains a while away from full fitness after his cruciate ligament injury while Dion Donohue and Ollie Banks have been infrequent starters this season.

Sam Hird and Liam O’Neil are both capable of playing in the engine room, but a lack of numbers at the back means they’re gainfully employed in defence for now.

Sheffield United midfielder Connor Dimaio, who turned 20, appeared in the Spireites’ reserves win at Gateshead in midweek.

He worked under Wilson’s assistant, Chris Morgan, at Bramall Lane.

But - with just three league appearances under his belt, all almost two years ago - it would seem unfair to hail him as an immediate first-team starter should he be recruited.

Left-back Dan Jones (broken ankle) is expected to start running on Monday and could be ready to play again in three weeks while Ian Evatt (Achilles) is to see a specialist next week.

Chesterfield are next in action a week tomorrow at home to Peterborough.
