The 21-year-old Sheffield Wednesday centre-back is set to go out on loan to gain some regular first-team experience.

Last week The Star reported that the Irishman was attracting some interest from Chesterfield and now the same newspaper says the Magpies are ‘keen to get a deal done’ for him.

League One Wednesday have sent a number of their youngsters out on loan in recent weeks to teams in non-league and Brennan is the next one on the list.

Brennan, who has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at youth level, has made a handful of appearances for the Owls including in last month’s 3-0 win against Newcastle United’s under-21s in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Earlier this month Spireites boss James Rowe said it was more likely that they would assess the squad at the ‘midway’ point of the season depending on where they are in the league and what they need.

When asked after Saturday’s win against Yeovil Town about any possible incomings, Rowe responded: “No news at all. We are where we are. It was a blow losing Haydn (Hollis) but Haydn was not due back until October anyway, at best. We have got the squad that I wanted and I am really pleased with it.”

Brennan can play centre-back and right-back and is right-footed.

He has come through the academy ranks at Hillsborough and signed his first professional contract at the club in May 2018.
