Chesterfield football secretary cried after finding out his team were Derbyshire FA's Grassroot Club of the Year

The secretary of a Chesterfield-based football club says he broke down in tears after discovering his club had been named the Derbyshire FA Grassroots Club Of The Year.

New Tupton Ivanhoe FC, who have 13 teams from U7s up to senior men, beat off competition from more than 370 clubs to scoop the honour.

And David Hoult, club secretary, said the news had left him in tears and feeling a sense of pride in his fellow volunteers.

“As you can imagine I am truly made up with this award,” he said. “To win the Derbyshire FA Grassroots club of the year is simply fantastic.

“As a grown man I actually broke down. It has been a long goal and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved.

“We have worked hard over the last three years to change things, we took in girls football and expanded our teams.

“We have worked hard to get a new ground and just worked to progress the club. We have overcome a lot to get to this point.

"I remember walking on to the field three years ago and everyone telling me it would never make a pitch. The field was full of divets and was a mess.

“I would like to express my personal thankyou to the team of coaches,managers and committee that have helped me to achieve the continued growth of New Tupton Ivanhoe FC.

“I have got a good crew behind me who are brilliant, they are grafters.

“Also thanks go to the Derbyshire FA and The Football Foundation for their continued support.

“We want to move things forward now to have a proper clubhouse and things like that, that will be our next project. We want to keep growing the teams.

“Together with the new pitch we have developed it's been a great achievement. Next year marks our 10 year anniversary which is set to be an exciting year.

New Tupton Ivanhoe FC, who were reborn in 2011, are a Community Standard Charter Standard club and are a FA Wildcat centre for girls football.

They have teams who play in the North Derbyshire Youth League, Sheffield and District Sunday League, Hope Valley League and KickStart.
