It was the first time Town fans had celebrated victory at the Proact since 17th September and it came thanks to a Jay O’Shea double and Man of the Match Ian Evatt’s goal.

Wilson said Chesterfield’s game management was better than it has been in recent times.

“At 3-1 we’re okay, then they get a goal out of nothing which is really down to ourselves with a stray pass and then it’s 3-2 and all hands on deck,” he said.

“We saw the game out well at times, we game managed better than we have earlier in the season when we may have conceded again. Today we didn’t. It’s a bit similar to Tuesday night, we’ve seen the game out and defended quite well.”

The afternoon got off to a disappointing start however, Rovers taking the lead after just three minutes.

But having fought their way back, Town went 3-1 up before conceding again and defending for their lives late on.

Wilson said: “Going a goal behind is always difficult at home, we didn’t buckle, we got back into the game quite quickly and then took the lead with a good move. Jay’s fantastic free-kick gave us a commanding position, but it’s never easy when a team throws everything at you.

“They had one at the back at times, shelling everything into the box, hoping for a mistake and thankfully we didn’t make one.

“There were one or two situations we got a bit anxious about and the fans got anxious and made us a bit anxious but overall we’ve seen it out well.”

Optimism is on the rise around the club, despite off field issues, with two wins in a row in League One and upcoming opportunities to progress in two cups.

And with players like Ched Evans, Jon Nolan, Paul McGinn, Dan Jones and Tommy Lee all hoping to be back in action in the coming weeks, things might just be looking up, in footballing terms at least.

The manager added: “The last month or so has had quite a good return for us in cup competitions and the league.

“Lads coming back gives us a lift and one or two on the bench today gave us a lift. Just the fact that they’re around us, and it gave the fans a lift as well.

“Let’s hope we can build on this and have a bit of a mini run now.”
