The race for Chesterfield winger Sam Clucas could be about to hot up with League One rivals Wigan favourites to win the race.
Athletic are still receiving almost £10m in parachute payments after their Premier League relegation in 2013 and could prize Clucas away, less than one year after he signed from Mansfield Town.
Latics have already recruited two strikers, former Spireite Craig Davies plus Brentford’s Will Grigg, amongst nine new faces, including ex-Spireites and Owls keeper Richard O’Donnell as they seek to halt their rapid fall from grace.
Chesterfield play a private match tomorrow against Algarve based SC Olhanense, a Portuguese second division side, with Saunders hoping to give all of his travelling squad a run out.
Sunday will see the players and management taking part in the club’s Open Day. The event runs from noon to 4pm with an on-pitch training session running between 12.30-1pm followed by the opportunity for autographs and photographs with the players.
Supporters will be able to see the home dressing room, the newly refurbished lounges and the Community Hub.
Mark Smith’s U18’s start their pre-season programme tonight with a short trip to Clipstone in Nottinghamshire (7.30pm kick-off). The young Spireites have nine new first year scholars and Smith will hope to blood several of them this evening.
