Southend United 2, Chesterfield 3
Two penalties from Danny Whitaker either side of a Deane Smalley goal allowed championship-chasing Chesterfield to open up a five-point gap at the top of the League Two table.
Whitaker gave the Spireites a 12th minute lead after Jack Hunt had been upended in the area and seven minutes later Smalley doubled the lead when he fired home following a pin-point pass from Whitaker.
In the second half, Craig Easton (58) gave Southend hope but four minutes later, Chesterfield restored their two-goal margin, Whitaker netting from the spot again after Drew Talbot had been tripped.
Southend’s Barry Corr pulled one back, another penalty, with seven minutes remaining but there was no late comeback as Chesterfield registered their first win double of the season.
