Spireites suffer rare defeat

Crewe Alexandra 2, Chesterfield 0

League Two leaders Chesterfield were defeated on the road for only the third time this season.

On a poor pitch, Clayton Donaldson hit his 20th goal of the season after 36 minutes to give Crewe the lead and the points were wrapped up when sub Danny Shelley hit home direct from a free-kick with just three minutes of normal time remaining.

After these two sides had shared ten goals in a B2net thriller, much was expected of the game but it was a much more routine event with neither side reaching great heights.

The visitors did rack up more shots that their hosts but not too many of them gilt edged.

The closest call for the table-toppers, at 1-0, came when Danny Whitaker’s box-edge shot hit the upright and sub Jack Lester struck the rebound wide from the Spireites’ best position.

Chesterfield FC manager John Sheridan said: “I thought we played quite well actually, we’ve lost the game and I’m expecting us to win every game, but I was happy with the performance up until the second goal. I thought we were the better side without creating a lot of chances, we tried to play pretty well on a tricky pitch.’’
