Assistant manager Leam Richardson was full of praise for Spireites following their 3-2 win at Gillingham.
He said: “It was a great result, any points away from home are precious and thankfully today we got them. I thought that the professionalism and application the lads showed was good, this is a tough place to come as they have good players and a good manager, so I’m thankful.”
Chesterfield’s injury and suspension woes meant that Sam Hird was handed his first start since August whilst Romy Boco and Ritchie Humphreys hadn’t started since the September 23 3-2 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.
Richardson never had any doubts they’d do a job for the team: “Those lads are very experienced, they’ve played hundreds of games between them. They’re reliable players. We didn’t expect them to get through the full 90, especially Sam, but his knowledge and experience got him through and thankfully we got the three points as well.”
Spireites host Peterborough United on Boxing Day with Darren Ferguson’s side reeling from a 1-0 home defeat against Preston, which means a home win on Friday will see Chesterfield leapfrog Posh.
