Spireite youth team stopper Teddy Marris is out in China for the Shanghai International Tournament as part of Matlock’s academy side.

They began their campaign with a win over the Fiji national youth team and consolidated their early success with victory over the Gunners thanks to skipper Ethan Knowles’ goal.

A 2-2 draw with a China Select XI, despite going down to 10 men, helped Matlock qualify from the group stages.

Marris’ proud dad Mike spoke to him on Tuesday after the game.

“He’s over the moon that they have beaten Arsenal,” said Mike.

“To beat the Fiji national team was a great achievement but to beat Arsenal, that’s absolutely amazing.

“He says the heat is almost unbearable but the lads battled on to get the win, all the lads gave it 100 per cent.

“Arsenal and Fiji were very strong sides but Justin Tellus’ tactics were spot on.”

It’s a great experience for Marris, who was given permission by the Spireites to go.

Mike added: “He says the facilities are amazing and the Chinese organisers and helpers are really friendly and are looking after them very well.

“He can’t wait for the next game.”

Back in the UK, his family are delighted with the reports coming through from China.

“All the family are so proud of Teddy and his achievements, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for him to play in China and we are very grateful to Justin Tellus from Matlock Town FC for inviting him to play and Mark Smith at Chesterfield FC for allowing him to go,” said Mike.
