Chesterfield secured the services of Jamie Devitt ahead of today’s trip to Southport.
The midfielder penned a six-month contract after impressing during pre-season and becomes the Spireites’ eighth summer signing.
He follows in the footsteps of other trialists Ritchie Humphreys and Matty Brown in signing for the League Two side this week.
Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner explained the length of contract for Devitt, who bagged a memorable goal against Huddersfield Town last Saturday. Turner said: “We just want to give him an incentive to get into the team, to establish himself in the squad and it may turn into a longer term contract within weeks or months of today.”
Against Conference side Southport, Spireites look to continue their unbeaten pre-season form.
Nathan Smith is close to making a return following a lengthy lay off with a fractured ankle and may yet play a part. On-trial Hamza Bencherif looks set to be given another chance after coming off the bench in the draw with Forest.
Ex-Chesterfield keeper Richard O’Donnell has joined Walsall on a free transfer.
