Spireites are expected to complete the signing of 22 year old Doncaster born keeper Alex Cairns.
The former Leeds United man has been on trial at the Proact Stadium and with Tommy Lee having suffered shoulder, groin and wrist problems last season plus his back-up Aaron Chapman is still recovering from ankle reconstruction, Dean Saunders has brought in some insurance.
Cairns, who made just one sub appearance for Leeds but had a successful season on loan at Stalybridge Celtic, has been offered a six month deal.
Saunders indicated much of his time at the moment is spent “trying to keep some of my players here,” a reference to Tendayi Darikwa and Sam Morsy, who’ve attracted bids from Championship clubs, but he’s also desperate to add talent to his squad having lost Sam Clucas and Gary Roberts plus out of contract Jimmy Ryan.
“We still need two or three more, though I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen from the players we’ve already got,” added the manager, who saw his side win 3-1 at Ilkeston on Tuesday night. Spireites will take on Owls today in a behind closed doors practice match as the build-up continues.
Drew Talbot, who picked up a summer hamstring injury, is expected to be available for the weekend trip to Hartlepool United, Spireites last game ahead of the League One opener at home to Barnsley.
Football fans will be able to see and have their photograph taken with the FA Cup at the Proact Stadium tomorrow.
The FA Cup Football Festival, organised by Chesterfield FC Community Trust, takes place in The HUB behind the East Stand from 1.30pm to 5pm. The event, which is free to attend, will also feature various football activities, live music, a speed cage, BBQ, police/fire service vehicles an appearance from Chester the Field Mouse.
