John Sheridan’s men twice took the lead but still slipped out of the League Cup tonight.

Chesterfield broke the early deadlock against their League One rivals when Danny Whitaker put the visitors ahead in this Cup first round.

But that advantage lasted just eight minutes.

Home striker Ashley Grimes equalised on 19 minutes.

The game was a stalemate until it went into extra time.

But Whitaker had what looked like the final say on 95 minutes when he banged home a penalty.

However, on 103 minutes, Dwayne Mattis put through his own goal to make it 2-2.

And worse was to come.

Grimes doubled his tally for the evening (for 3-2) to put Sheridan’s men out of the competition.
