Chesterfield’s FA Cup campaign was over before it really begun with defeat at in-form Bradford City.

It is the first time the Spireites have been knocked out in the first round of the competition since the 2011/12 season.

Comically, referee Anthony Blackhouse pulled up with a hamstring injury – with shouts of “you’re not fit to referee” as the fourth official came on.

Goals from a pair of Alex’s, Gilliead and Jones, condemned Jack Lester’s outfit to defeat at Valley Parade.

Despite naming a fairly strong side for the trip to Yorkshire, Lester would much prefer a lack of distractions as his team try to fight their way out of the League Two drop zone.

Retaining league football must be the highest priority for the struggling Spireites, although Barnsley showed just what a cup run can inspire after going from the relegation zone to promotion through the League One play-offs in the 2015/16 campaign as they won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

It took just four minutes for the Spireites to go behind in the tie as Gilliead gave the Bantams the lead.

Jones played the 21-year-old in behind and he duly beat Joel Anyon in to the bottom corner for his first goal for the club.

Down the other end top scorer Kristian Dennis was kept out by Colin Doyle.

Andy Kellett fired wide, before Timothy Dieng also missed the target for the hosts.

After half an hour referee Blackhouse had to come off.

Dennis then thought he had added to his impressive tally for the season, before being adjudged offside.

And moments later Jones added a second for Stuart McCall’s men with a well-taken finish.

There was nearly a third before the break with Charlie Wyke having a goal disallowed for a push.

The Spireites were out early for the second half after an earful from Lester at the break.

But it failed to inspire a comeback, despite Joe Rowley going close just after the restart.

On the hour, Anyon had to be at his best to deny Charlie Wyke’s decent effort from 25 yards.

And eight minutes later Anyon produced another piece of magic to deny Paul Taylor, with the onrushing Jones smashing the rebound over.
