Chesterfield 2, Oldham Athletic 1
JP Trophy holders Chesterfield won through to the second round of this year’s competition after a dramatic finish at the Proact Stadium.
The deciding strike - a headed own goal from Matt Smith - came in time added on at the end when it looked as if the match was heading for a penalty shoot-out.
Oldham, who Chesterfield beat in last season’s Northern final to book their ticket to Wembley, took the lead in the 23rd minute.
On target was Smith, the own goal man, who headed home a cross from Lee Croft.
Chesterfield levelled in the 48th minute when Danny Whitaker pounced on an error by James Tarkowski to beat keeper Dean Bouzanis from close range.
On the hour Bouzanis saved a Whitaker penalty but Chesterfield had the momentum and gained the win when Drew Talbot’s teasing right wing cross found Smith’s head to herald the first victory for caretaker manager Tommy Wright.
Worryingly, keeper Tommy Lee fell awkwardly in the area just before the end and had to leave the field with a shoulder injury. It was suspected he had suffered ligament damage and he was taken to hospital for check-up.
