'˜Just because I'm inexperienced, does that make me any less of a candidate?'

Ian Evatt believes inexperience should not rule him out of the running for the Chesterfield job.

Caretaker boss Evatt has given the strongest indication yet that he wants the role permanently.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s game at home to Newport, Evatt revealed how much he has relished his first week as a boss.

“It’s a bit of a change and a culture shock but I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said.

“It’s probably confirmed I am cut out for this.

“It’s been a shock to the system, not being in the changing room every day and distancing myself from the players, going in my office and making decisions, thinking about them as individuals differently has been hard at times.

“But I do want this, I want to be a manager whether it’s now or in the future.”

Evatt, 36, insists he still has life in him yet as a player but sees his future in the dugout and he hopes that is at the Proact.

“I’m dedicated to this football club and if that means that I’m a player in the Conference, I’m a player, if that means they give me the honour of managing this football club, I’ll be manager of this football club,” he said.

“I’m not looking to leave Chesterfield, I’m here to try and get this club back where it belongs.

“I’ll give everything I possibly can to make sure that happens.”

And the centre-half believes he has the credentials, if not the experience.

“It’s a big job for anybody. Just because I’m inexperienced, does that make me any less of a candidate? I don’t think so.

“I know this football club better than anyone else. I know this group of players better than anyone else, especially when it comes down to the fact that 19 of these players are still going to be here next season.”
