Michael Nelson has revealed the ruthless changes that Martin Allen made at Barnet last season as he came close to pulling off a miracle.

Barnet looked down and out when Allen took control in March, but a remarkable run of results, including a 3-0 beating of Chesterfield, meant it was only by goal difference that the Bees were relegated.

“He came in and made an impact straight away,” said Nelson, who has since joined Allen at the Proact.

“He was quite ruthless in terms of what he wanted.

“He cut the squad right back to about 20 players and added one or two.

“The rest of the boys weren’t really involved. He was really ruthless.”

Allen kept things simple for the players who were part of his plans and in return, they delivered results.

“In terms of training, the sessions were simple, for everyone to understand.

“He was clear on how he wanted things to go and how we were going to do it.

“If not, feel free to go and train with the 23s or 18s, or find another club.

“It was a real impact, everyone knew on the training pitch it was time to go and work.

“We got five wins, one draw and two defeats with a team that struggled to win a game before that, it was quite a big statement.”
