Hird back in training and champing at the bit but Spireites will be '˜sensible'

After a return to training this week, Sam Hird will be '˜champing at the bit' to play on Saturday, but his management team will only select him if it's '˜sensible.'

Chesterfield’s assistant manager Chris Morgan revealed the good news that the 29-year-old defender is well on the road to recovery after a hernia operation.

But while the centre-half might be raring to get back into first team action after a five-week absence, it’s not as simple as just throwing on the shirt again when Town visit Peterborough United on Saturday.

That’s the situation facing a number of Spireites who are eyeing comebacks.

Morgan said: “It’s difficult really.

“We’ve only just got the lads back in training this week, it’s a big ask to throw people straight back in. They need some training under their belt, they need time.

“The lads we have got coming back in have been working hard with Mal the fitness coach and we’ll look to try and get them back in as soon as we can.”

Hird has been one of those putting the hard yards in with Mal Purchase in preparation for a return.

Unlike team-mates Dan Jones and Angel Martinez who have faced incredibly complicated rehabilitation periods and a number of setbacks, Hird’s issue was relatively straightforward according to Morgan.

“He’s one of the lucky ones. Every operation and injury has its own downfalls but Sam with his hernia, it’s one you expect people back sooner rather than later.

“After the first bit of pain subsided he could crack on and get some proper work done.

“He’s only had this week training.

“We’ll keep our eye on him. No doubt Sam being Sam he’ll be champing at the bit, wanting to play but I think we’ve got to be sensible.”
