Happy Chesterfield through to final

Chesterfield won a dramatic a penalty shoot out tonight to reach the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern final.

After tying 1-1 on 90 minutes, the Spireites won 6-5 on penalties.

The winner from Drew Talbot was a tremendous moment for the 376 travelling fans.

The Spireites won the tournament two season ago and made a decent start in this lively game with Oliver Banks flashing the ball just wide.

Banks had another chance only minutes later.

But Canadian midfielder Michael Petrasso had an opportunity at the other end, shooting high well over.

Oldham went ahead though on 21 minutes, Danny Philliskirk poking the ball past Tommy Lee.

Ritchie Humphreys was booked after a tackle near the halfway line, but Chesterfield equalised when Eoin Doyle picked out Drew Talbot whose cross was nodded in by Tendayi Darikwa.

The home fans were screaming for a penalty when Ian Evatt brought David Mellor down in the Chesterfield penalty area but the referee was having none of it.

But then Darikwa then hit side netting in a game which was becoming quite a spectacle.

Humphreys hit the bar as Spireites turned up the heat in the second half.

Lee then came into his own with some timely interventions - there was little between the sides.

The game was now less hectic than earlier - but it was hard to choose who would be the winner.

David Mellor could have provided it, but his cross-shot flew just wide for Athletic on 89 minutes.

Then it was straight on to penalties.

Adam Rooney. Jonson Clarke-Harris, James Weslowski, Korey Smith and Jonathan Grounds scored for the home team.

Marc Richards, Doyle, Jimmy Ryan, Garry McSheffrey, Darikwa and Talbot held their nerve for the Spireites.

Banks had one saved - but a great night for Paul Cook’s men.
