A super-charged Chesterfield strengthened their Play Off credentials tonight - while hurtling opponents Colchester further towards the relegation trap-door.
The Spireites occupy sixth position in the play off pack. While the U’s are next to bottom. Their respective positions were reflected by a three goal blitz from the home side at the Proact stadium.
And on-song Chesterfield repeated that scoring feat in the second half.
The bumper victory meant the Spireites are well clear of the pack with just three games left and the play-offs are in realistic touching distance.
Few would back against them achieving that after such a spectacular display.
The U’s seemed to start well but were rocked on their heels by a home strike from Gary Roberts.
His right footed volley from the centre of the box found the top left corner after support play involving Drew Talbot.
The fifth minute strike was followed by a brace from Sam Clucas.
The midfielder’s first came on 15 minutes when Dan Gardner played him in and he fired into the roof of the net from 10 yards.
Colchester went to pieces.
Straight from the kick-off, Jay O’Shea grabbed possession and set up Clucas to score confidently, with a lob.
The only bad news at this point was when Talbot’s hamstring went and he had to be replaced.
But the score remained the same at the break.
Colchester made three changes at the interval as they tried to get a toe-hold in the game. But they almost conceded again when O’Shea smacked an effort narrowly adrift.
Gardner and Morsy both had half chances wide of mark too.
But then Gardner found the net to increase the humiliation for the visitors - his right footer zipping into the top right corner.
Colchester’s embarrassment was to increase.
Goal number five came from Jimmy Ryan; he traded passes with Gardner and whipped it over the keeper Chris Lewington.
It had become a very special night indeed for the swooning home fans - they were watching their heroes taking another League One side completely apart.
And they watched a sixth ping in, when Roberts converted a penalty he had drawn himself from the keeper, who was probably looking to be sent off at this stage.
