Ten man Chesterfield were dumped out of the League Cup on a day when substitutes made the headlines, good and bad.
Jabo Ibehre came off the bench to put the Cumbrians ahead and he volleyed the winner having seen extra time earned when sub Mani Dieseruvwe scored. Both goals were plated up by subs, Kevin Osei and Jake Orrell. Osei ended the contest with a last gasp third.
Spireites’ good work took a decisive turn for the worse when Dieseruvwe was sent off just 12 seconds into the added time.
Dean Saunders had rested Drew Talbot and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, bringing in Charlie Raglan and Armand Gnanduillet. Sam Hird switched to right back with Raglan slotting in centrally at the back alongside Ian Evatt.
Looking to end a run of eight first round losses, Chesterfield started the game well.
Chances piled up in the first five minutes with Dan Gardner striking the upright in a three chance attack that also saw Gnanduillet go close and Sam Morsy force a fingertip save from Mark Gillespie.
Midfielder Angelo Balanta then read a situation well to block a goal-bound Gnanduillet angled shot.
After 10 minutes of away attacking, Carlisle saw Steven Rigg head well wide but soon after he forced Tommy Lee to paw away a shot from an opening fashioned by Alexander McQueen.
Gary Dicker saw Raglan block and Lee had to be called into action again to push a Balanta curler out for a corner and then be at the top of his game to twice deny Danny Grainger free-kicks.
Ariyibi had a good touch to get away from David Atkinson but keeper Gillespie reacted quickly to collect. Lee again had to raid the top drawer to keep a deflected effort from Charlie Wyke out and from the break Morsy earned a corner that saw Ariyibi’s shot blocked after Gardner delivered into the danger area.
O’Shea created an opening that Carlisle managed to scramble out for a corner and McQueen’s teaser was headed out by Raglan.
The game continued at a pace, Carlisle made a double change but the first chance after that fell to Gnanduillet after fine Gardner work but the striker’s shot was blocked.
Dieseruvwe came on for Gnanduillet whilst the injured David Atkinson was replaced by Tom Miller and almost immediately Spireites fell behind to Ibehre’s header, his first ever goal against Chesterfield.
Orrell came on for his debut and soon set up Dieseruvwe to strike home his first Chesterfield goal from just inside the 18 to earn an extra 30 minutes but just 12 seconds into extra time the scorers’ evening was over as he was red carded for leading with an elbow in a challenge.
It was a decisive moment, so late on.
Yet there were no clear chances in the first period of extra time and short-handed Chesterfield looked strong. Lee had to dive at Ibehre’s feet at the start of the second extra half but the striker gave the keeper no chance with a powerful eight yard volley to regain the home team the advantage and this time they didn’t relinquish it.
