Dion Donohue had need not get comfortable in any one position in the Spireites formation.
Gary Caldwell says he will use the 23-year-old wherever he needs to, just like he used one of his former charges at a previous club.
“I think every game will determine where he’s best suited for the needs of the team,” said the boss.
“I had a player at Wigan, Chris McCann, a left footed player who had played his whole career in midfield.
“I played him left-back, left wing-back, left centre-back and he was a fantastic player for the team.”
Donohue’s ability to play left-back, centre-half or in central midfield is the kind of selection headache Caldwell welcomes.
“I love having players like that, who give me options for how I want to play,” he said.
“Dion reminds me of Chris a lot, the way he plays the game.”
The Welshman came to the club as a central midfielder and admits that’s his preferred position, but he was predominantly deployed as a left-back by Danny Wilson before Caldwell used him in a back three and in the middle of the park.
Donohue has made 38 appearances this season for Chesterfield, scoring one goal.
