Manager John Sheridan was frustrated after watching his men lose 1-0 to Wimbledon on the opening day of the League Two season.
Chesterfield dominated the opening period but were undone by a long ball which Wombles striker Jack Midson hit home in the 35th minute.
The Blues boss thought his team had done enough to win the game.
He said: “We should have scored four in the first 15-20 minutes but we didn’t take our chances.
“Then they scored with their first shot.
“The game was there for the taking and it frustrates me.’’
The result followed on from Chesterfield’s first round exit of the Captial One Cup when they were beaten 2-1 in extra time by Tranmere.
