Chesterfield have bolstered their squad with two new additions.
Former Aston Villa defender Chris Herd has joined the Spireites on a short-term deal until January.
West Bromwich Albion defender Jack Fitzwater has also signed on a 28-day loan.
Australian international Herd, 26, did not join in time to face Colchester today.
He played 42 times for Villa and spent time on loan at Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic last season.
Herd said: “The club got in touch with my representatives so I came down and things seemed to work for both parties and I was happy to get a deal tied up.
“I think this team is very capable of gaining promotion to the Championship and I’m glad to be a part of it.”
Fitzwater, 17, has been training with Chesterfield and could play today.
However, he is more likely to be on the bench as cover for Drew Talbot, who is set to return at right back.
Manager Dean Saunders said: “He’s played for the West Brom first team in pre-season and he comes recommended to me by Tony Pulis.
“We’re a bit short of defenders at the minute and he’s a young player who might be able to come in and help us.
“He hasn’t looked out of his depth in training so we’ll make sure he’s ready to play in League One.”
