Chesterfield: Evatt puzzled by Spireites’ leaky defence

Spireites host near neighbours Notts County this afternoon hoping to avoid conceding heavily again.

Paul Cook’s men have shipped three goals in each of the last two games and skipper Ian Evatt is at a loss to explain why.

The central defender said: “I wish I had the answer really; for whatever reason we’re conceding sloppy goals. We’re not getting carved open from open play and we’re not conceding chance after chance, it’s just momentary lapses in concentration at set pieces or from balls in the box and it’s something we need to look at.”

One thing that’s not helped has been the chopping and changing in the back line.

Liam Cooper moved on to Leeds United after just one match, then Sam Hird picked up a long term injury, Evatt and Jack Broadhead both had to serve suspensions whilst Dan Jones, Georg Margreitter and Ritchie Humphreys have suffered from injury absences.

Evatt said: “It’s not been easy with the amount of injuries we’ve had in the back four. Daniel Jones is out, Georg Margreitter came in and was then quickly out again, then Charlie Raglan and Ritchie Humphreys have come in. It’s not been easy with the changes, but there are no excuses from our point. We’ve worked hard on it this week and hopefully we’ll be able to keep it tight on Saturday.”

Margreitter will return after concussion but Cook’s choice for left back will be left until the last minute as Jones battles to shake off the hamstring strain picked up in the 3-3 draw at Preston North End that caused him to miss the 3-2 defeat at Doncaster Rovers last week.
