Chesterfield’s preparations for the first round Capital One Cup tie at the Proact Stadium was once again dictated by speculation regarding Liam Cooper’s future at the club.
The 22-year-old has been the subject of interest from Leeds United over the last fortnight and, after seeing two bids rejected, the Whites seem to have finally got their man.
Chesterfield confirmed prior to kick-off they had agreed an undisclosed fee with the Championship club for the former Hull City man and that personal terms were being discussed.
The Spireites hold Cooper in high regard, slapping a £1m valuation on his head, and have been reluctant to let one of their most trusted defenders leave in mid-August.
It is not yet clear if the funds will be made available for manager Paul Cook to add much needed depth to his squad, as they prepare for the rigours of life in League One.
Sam Hird replaced Cooper in Chesterfield’s starting line up to face Huddersfield Town, as Cook named one change to the starting eleven to that which beat Leyton Orient in the league on Saturday.
