Caldwell will '˜stand or fall' by next season, not this one

Gary Caldwell will be given a chance to rebuild the Chesterfield squad this summer, despite a disappointing start to his tenure as first team boss.

The Spireites have won just one of Caldwell’s 13 in charge since his January arrival.

Pressure has been mounting on the Scot, who was subjected to the anger of fans during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat by Rochdale.

But club owner Dave Allen will give Caldwell time to put together his own squad.

Director Ashley Carson posted on Facebook in response to criticism of the mananger, saying: “Had a meeting with the owner and he is wanting GC to build his own team and stand or fall by next season.”

Carson also suggested that sacking another manager wasn’t an option for the cash-strapped club.

“We are still paying the last manager off and his assistant on a monthly basis. To add another one to the monthly outgoings is simply mad,” he said.

Caldwell’s rebuild will be assisted by a new head of recruitment.

The club aim to appoint one by the end of the weekend.
