Allen excited by new signing's potential and what he brings to the Spireites

Charlie Carter has signed a two-year deal, with the option for a third year.

The Spireites paid an undisclosed fee for the 21-year-old midfielder and former club Woking stand to benefit in the future if the player develops and is sold by the Spireites.

Carter has impressed Allen in the past, so much so he left a lasting impression.

“He caught my eye a couple of times I’ve seen him and I knew he was a player I would try and sign in the future,” said the manager.

“We had to pay a small fee, which is undisclosed, with potential sell ons for the future.”

Carter, who fired in a dozen goals for a side relegated from the National League last season, is the youngest new face at Chesterfield since Allen arrived.

“What I’ve tried to do so far is to have experienced players at this level, strong leaders, strong men and now we need to add some craft, quality and goals,” said Allen.

“He’s different to what we’ve signed so far.

“He’s got a good scoring ratio for a young player, good by anyone’s standards in a team that struggled,.

“He’s got the potential to go on and be a very good player at a higher level.

“He’s a good athlete, gets into the box and scores goals.”

The arrival of another young, attacking midfielder does not mean bad news for Joe Rowley, however.

Allen said: “With Rowley as well, we’ve got two young players who can both do good stuff for us in the final third and add goals.

“That will be a good blend, for me.”

To facilitate the deal Chesterfield had to ‘wheel and deal’ according to Allen, which meant getting another player a new club.

Louis Dodds is to return to former club Port Vale on a season-long loan deal.

“I wish him the best of luck, he’s a good player,” said Allen of the 31-year-old.

“But I feel we needed a younger, fresher player for that position and Charlie Carter can take on that role.

“We had to wheel and deal to make things happen.”
