Adrian Whitbread full of praise for youngsters as Spireites beat Nuneaton 5-0

Chesterfield's Assistant-manager Adrian Whitbread described yesterday's match at Nuneaton as a 'great workout' after a young Spireites team won 5-0.

The visitors went 3-0 up in just nine minutes following goals from Lewis Walker, Lee Shaw and Jamie Sharman.

And Ify Ofoegbu and Luke Rawson added further goals after the break to complete an emphatic victory.

Whitbread said: “I think the senior players helped the young boys and I think the young boys helped the senior players.

“We were three-nil up very early and I wouldn’t say we took our foot off the gas but Nuneaton got the bit between their teeth and they got on top.

“Joe (Anyon) made some good saves and there were some last-ditch clearances, but overall it was a great workout. All in all, in a great afternoon with lots of goals for ourselves and a clean sheet.”

Whitbread had words of praise for the youngsters who featured.

“Credit to all the young players,” he said. “They’re learning their trade and I think it’s great to see them playing and given the opportunity. Hopefully they’ll continue to progress and knock on the first-team door.”

The Spireites are next in action on Wednesday night when they face a Wigan Athletic XI in Tommy Lee’s testimonial match (7pm)
