Chesterfield defender wants to get the town, the fans and his family back onside

The 34-year-old married into a local family, who let him know all about it when the Spireites aren’t performing.

Evatt wants to do everything he can to get his missus and the people of the town back onside.

“Its not nice living in Chesterfield and being married to a Chesterfield fan, seeing us in the relegation zone – she reminds me of it every day,” he said.

“Her family are all Chesterfield fans so you obviously hear when fans aren’t too happy with how you’re playing and the way the team is playing.

“We need to get the town back onside again and get the fans behind us.

“It’s only natural that after the results we’ve had in the last few weeks the fans won’t be happy and rightly so.

“It’s important we turn it around and win them back, we can do it, we’ve done it before.

“It’s important we get our finger out and push this club back up the table.”

A hip injury and by his own admittance the consistency of his performances have kept Evatt from being a regular starter.

The veteran knows he has doubters among Town’s fanbase and he’s out to prove them wrong.

“I missed the second half of last season, started the season but had a bit of a hip problem I was struggling with, playing unfit which probably affected my performance,” he said.

“I just want to play football and I’ll work as hard as I possibly can to play as much as I can.

“With my age it’s no doubt people will be thinking I’m finished, doubting I can get back to the player I am but I’m sure I can, I’ve got a lot to give and I’m out there trying to prove people wrong.”

His time out of the side has been a frustrating period, largely powerless to do anything about the results not going Chesterfield’s way.

Although he’s an experienced head with plenty to say, Evatt concedes he has had to voice his opinion delicately, for fear of being misconstrued as bitter.

So he simply got his head down and grafted on the training ground before making a return to action at Charlton.

He said: “It’s very frustrating, especially when you’ve not had that in your career before.

“You have to respect the manager’s decision and do whatever you can to get back in the team.

“I’ve been working very hard and given him reminders that I’m ready when called upon. Saturday was that time.”
