Chesterfield confidence '˜slowly building' ahead of Southend trip

Southend United will host a confident Chesterfield on Saturday, says Spireites assistant boss Chris Morgan.

Looking ahead to the long trip, Morgan expressed his admiration for The Shrimpers and their versatility: “They’re a good team, particularly at home.

“They can play two or three different ways.

“You look through the squad they’ve got, they’ve got some experience, some good young players and they’re sat in eighth position just one point out of the play-offs.

“That speaks for itself on what we can expect.”

But Southend can also expect a tough game, against a Chesterfield side unbeaten in four outings and likely to welcome back club captain Gary Liddle.

“It’s a game we’re certainly looking forward to, on the back of a few good results we’ve had,” said Morgan.

“Confidence is slowly and quietly building within.

“And on the back of the disappointment of not winning on Tuesday, I’m sure we’ll go down there in good spirits.”

With big games coming thick and fast in the relegation battle, Danny Wilson and his assistant have been keen to ensure nerves don’t play a part of proceedings at the Proact.

Morgan said: “It’s trying to creat the right atmosphere in and around the club, and the right messages in training.

“If you do that it comes down to the players.

“If they receive those messages and they feel comfortable, and they cross the white line and go and play, it’s them that deal with the pressure.

“We can only prepare them for it, they have to deal with it. If they go out and deal with it, that’s why you get results.”
