Northern Irishman Robbie Weir, who desire to leave the Proact was recently revealed by Allen, will wear the armband for Town again in the new campaign.

Weir was captain a number of times in the 2016/17 season after signing a two-year deal under Gary Caldwell’s management.

Allen said he had several candidates for the position, but opted for Weir.

“It’s been three weeks now since we all started back at training and over the three weeks, it’s given me the opportunity on a daily basis to get to know all the characters and personalities of all our players and staff,” he said.

“Amongst our squad, we have seven players that could most definitely be captain and lead our squad on and off the field to be successful, so it’s been a tough decision.

“We have decided that Robbie Weir will be our captain and he will represent us on and off the field. I am absolutely certain that he will do a great job.”

There will be no club captain, however because Allen expects all of his players to represent the club off the pitch.

“I’ve been asked about the possibility of a club captain. For me, each and every player has a responsibility, not only to do good work on the pitch, but also to make himself available for community work and charity work.

“Therefore, we will not be having a club captain, as every player we have will fulfil that role with energy, enthusiasm and total commitment to all charities, community work and of course the paying public, at home or away and wherever we play.”
