“Nobody wants to be in a relegation fight, we want to be up the other end of the table but we have to be realistic.

“The team has been near the bottom of the table for two years so it would be very difficult to get promoted the first year, it would have to be an unbelievable turn around.

“I want us to be competitive, hard to beat and I want people to come here and know they’ve got a game on like we were before lockdown.

“I want people to know that Chesterfield are not a soft touch anymore and that they are a team with a great spirit.”

In terms of his new 12-month contract, Pemberton said it was an “easy decision” to stay.

“It was pretty straight forward, it is obviously somewhere that I want to be,” he added. “I have enjoyed working here and I have had great support from everybody working here and the messages from the fans have been great.”
