In this piece, we’ll be lining up Chesterfield’s starting eleven against Chelsea’s to see how the two compare.
Chesterfield will be taking on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, January 8th – details of how to watch the game if you weren’t lucky enough to get a ticket can be found here.
5. Marcos Alonso vs Tyrone Williams
One of Chelsea's more experienced players, Marcos Alonso has been known for his versatile wing back play since the day he joined in 2016 for £24 million. Though he can be defensively lacklustre at times, he often makes up for this with his stellar play on the wings. Tyrone Williams signed for the Spirites in November of 2021 for an undisclosed fee (which was thought to be around £20,000). This came following him winning Solihull Moors' player of the season award and he hasn't disappointed. Physically imposing, he can play both right back and centre half to a high standard. 6. Jorginho vs Manny Oyeleke
2021 was a truly special year for Jorginho. Not only did he win the Champions' League with Chelsea, he also won the European Cup with Italy, playing an integral role in both campaigns. Additionally, he was voted as the third best player in the world back in December - although this may be an exaggeration of his talents. He cost Chelsea £50 million to sign. Manny Oyeleke is no doubt a talented player, with a strong physical build in his favour. Sadly, he's suffered from various injuries that have hampered his career on multiple occasions. When he's fit, however, he's a very useful player to have in midfield. He was signed for an undisclosed fee, which was believed to be in the region of £10,000. Photo: -
7. N'Golo Kante vs Curtis Weston
N'Golo Kante has been one of the best players in the world for a number of years at this point. To call him "tireless" would be an understatement - his legendary engine and underrated ability on the ball makes him invaluable to Chelsea's setup. After he famously won the Premier League at Leicester City, Chelsea snapped him up for a reported fee of £32 million. The experienced Curtis Weston began his playing career back in 2004, so he's had plenty of time to work on his trade. He's no stranger to a booking and knows how to rattle an opposing midfield - the Spirites will certainly look at him to set an example against Chelsea. He's another player who didn't cost Chesterfield anything to sign. Photo: -
8. Mason Mount vs Saidou Khan
Mason Mount is another product of the Chelsea academy, therefore, he didn't cost them any money. His intense work rate and adept dribbling ability have made him a mainstay of Chelsea's first team over the past few years - though somewhat less so for England. Regardless, he's extremely talented and will enjoy a glittering career. Saidou Khan is similar to Mount in a few ways - he's a smart midfield player who can push forward and score goals when necessary. He's found the net on five occasions this season in the league, making him Chesterfield's joint second top scorer. In addition, they got him for free. Photo: -
