Caldwell unhappy with number and manner of recent Chesterfield red cards

Gary Caldwell was no stranger to a red card during his career, but he's no fan of them being shown to his Chesterfield players.

And the manner in which a number of Spireites have received their marching orders in recent weeks hasn’t impressed the gaffer.

Jon Nolan saw his second red of the season after two yellow card offences at Bolton, but last Sunday at Sheffield United Dan Gardner was sent off for violent conduct for a petulant slap aimed at Billy Sharp in the aftermath of a Town goal.

David Faupala was dismissed for kicking out in retaliation last month against Rochdale and Dion Donohue’s red against Southend was for an avoidable tackle.

Defender Tom Anderson was also sent off twice this season.

Caldwell, who was shown 10 red cards as a player, has addressed the issue with his squad:“I said to the players, discipline in recent weeks, we’ve had too many red cards.

“If you want to show you’re hard go and tackle people by all means, but don’t get sent off for some of the silly decisions we’ve had in recent weeks.”
