Caldwell mulls over timing of retained list announcement

Gary Caldwell is still making his mind up about when he'll inform his out of contract players if they're to be offered a new deal or not.

The Chesterfield boss indicated after Saturday’s defeat by Charlton that he had made up his mind on the squad.

He also hinted that he wouldn’t be keeping many.

But he hasn’t yet decided on a date to reveal his retained list.

The Spireites have a large number of players coming to the end of their contracts at the Proact.

That number includes the likes of club captain Ian Evatt, left-back Dan Jones, goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann, midfielder Angel Martinez and veteran forward Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

Youngsters Laurence Maguire and Rai Simons are also out of contract in the summer.

When asked when he would be meeting the players to reveal their fate he said: “It’s something I’m thinking about and speaking to the club about.

“It’s something we’ll look at in the week.”

Whilst Caldwell, whose Spireites will play in League Two next season and could finish the season bottom of the table on Sunday, says players should still be out to impress, it sounds like it’s too late for them to change his mind on their futures.

“There’s always a chance to impress whether it’s me or anyone watching in the crowd,” he said.

“Every time you go out on the pitch you should want to impress.

“Whether that changes my mind or not I’m not so sure.

“The players have to have a level of performance every day, their own standards have to be high.

“It’s not about trying to affect next season for them at this club, they should have that day in and day out.”

Caldwell has a number of senior players contracted to 2018, including fan favourite goalkeeper Tommy Lee, centre-half Sam Hird, right-back Paul McGinn and this season’s top scorer Kristian Dennis.
