Britannia rule at top of table

Four goals from Sam Gilthorpe helped Britannia Rose remain top of Chesterfield and District NAPIT Sunday League Division 2 following a 5-2 victory over Dronfield Vic.

It took Gilthorpe just 17 minutes to get off the mark when he slotted past Chris Conroy in the visitors’ goal.

Britannia Rose extended their lead with two goals in four minutes. First Liam Roberts fired home a loose ball before Gilthorpe got his second, moving into the right hand side of the box and beating keeper Conroy.

Dronfield quickly got back into the game through a fine strike from Adam Hopwood to trail 3-1 at half-time.

The second half started with the visitors on top, led by the craft of captain Danny Hamilton.

However, against the run of play the home side went further ahead when Gilthorpe chased down a loose ball, a ricochet with the outcoming keeper saw the ball fall into the number nine’s path and he slotted home for his hat-trick.

The visitors pulled a goal back in the 67th minute through Kurt Fish’s chip from wide on the right.

As the game opened up, Callum Featherstone struck the post with a 25-yard effort for the home side before Gilthorpe rounded the keeper to slot the ball into an empty net for his fourth to make it 5-2 to the leaders.
