Branston expects quartet of 2016/17 Spireites to sign new contracts

The head of recruitment and development is confident that Chesterfield have offered fair terms to club captain Ian Evatt, youngster Laurence Maguire, midfielder Dan Gardner and frontman Rai Simons.

A relegation to League Two has meant a reduction in the playing budget at the Proact.

But even in that context, Branston is squarely behind the deals put on the table for the foursome.

“I personally believe they’ll all sign,” he said.

“The club has gone out of their way to offer them good value contracts for the position we’re in.”

Branston, who was appointed at the start of April, believes his contribution to the summer recruitment policy has been welcomed by the club.

And he suggests that the kind of contractual issues that have emerged in recent times are a thing of the past.

“I feel the football club is going forward with my ideas on budgets and we’re not going to get caught out by the bits and bobs that have gone on behind the scenes before,” he said.

“I think we’re being backed in our ideas to take the club forward in the budget.

“Dave Allen has put his hand in his pocket no end and wants to see a return for his money, definitely, this year.

“I like that pressure, the gaffer likes that pressure and we’ll try to achieve that with the right decisions with the playing staff we bring in this year.”
