So he’s looking to the veterans in midfield to help him on the steep learning curve of professional football.

“I can tell they’ve all played at high levels and done good things in the game,” he said, of the other midfielders at the club.

“Curtis Weston, I speak to him quite a lot.

“He’s done a lot in the game, played at a good standard and with me wanting to be a Football League player, it’s good to talk to him.

“Sam Wedgbury is a very experienced midfielder, so it’s good to get little bits from these experienced players.

“I’m still quite young and I’m still learning so I want to take things from other players’ games.”

Carter scored a dozen goals last season.

That statistic isn’t particularly remarkable until you view it in the context of his position in the team and their National League struggles.

Like Chesterfield, they went into the summer on the back of a relegation.

This season, Carter wants contribute in as many ways as he can to ensure Town swap divisions in the right way.

“It’s one of my key attributes, scoring goals,” he said.

“I scored a few in this league last season and it’s something I want to do, but I’ve got other stuff to my game.

“That’s only one thing I will be focusing on, I’ll need to work hard for the team.

“The main thing is to win games and get this club promoted.”

Achieving promotion would kill two birds with one stone for the 6ft 1ins former Fulham prospect.

“I want to play full-time football in the Football League.

“That’s always been my ambition, that was my aim with Woking and it’s still my aim now.

“That came with my decision to move to Chesterfield.

“They’re a massive club, they’re a Football League club with ambition to go straight back up.

“Hopefully I can help with that.”

Less than a month into his time at the club Carter says he’s settling in well and learning what it will take to be one of Allen’s Spireites.

“Training is really intense, we’ve all been working very hard with a mixture of ball work and runs to get our fitness up.

“I think we’re all enjoying it, the intensity is good.

“We’ve had a few team meetings about different things.

“I think the main things have been hard work, dedication when we’re putting on the shirt and giving the fans what they want.

“We want to play for each other and the club and the fans who pay their money.”
