Angry Bulwell accuse Pinxton fans of “offensive” abuse

PEACEMAKER -- one of Bulwell's general managers, Steve Osborbne, who tried to calm the fans down and protect the referee.

The Bulls pointed the finger after sliding to a deserved 3-1 defeat at home to Pinxton in the Central Midlands League’s South Division last Saturday.

But officials claim they were subjected to offensive behaviour and comments from Pinxton supporters, which secretary Andy Radford described as “beyond belief”.

“This isn’t wanted at any level of football,” Radford said. “Pinxton were reported last season when trouble led to a match being abandoned. Now the league must enforce some sort of punishment.”

At one stage, one of Bulwell’s general managers, Steve Osborne, had to intervene and make his feelings known to the fans.

It was even originally alleged that the abuse included at least one racist chant. But after Pinxton had vehemently denied this and lodged a complaint, the league asked Bulwell to take down reference to it on the club’s website.

Nevertheless, a full investigation looks sure to be held, especially after the sour atmosphere turned nasty in the closing minutes when Bulwell striker Conor Carter was sent off for violent conduct after swinging an elbow.

As he walked off there was a melee involving fans and officials.

“Referee Martyn Fisher blew his whistle to avoid any further conflicts,” said Radford. “His safety was always paramount and myself and Steve Osborne assured that.”

No-one from Pinxton FC was available for comment on the issue.

Pinxton took the lead when Jake Vernon tapped home from close range after a square ball that left Bulls defender Richard Saunders bemused.

They also missed a penalty, dubiously awarded when Lewis Wheelhouse was adjudged to have felled Vernon. Pete Stubley’s poor spot-kick hit a post, and Bulwell made them pay when Carter equalised with a 20-yard free-kick into the top corner.

However, Pinxton restored their lead on 66 when Vernon made the most of an error by ‘keeper Matt Simpson. And they sealed the points on 86 with a tap-in for skipper Stubley.

Pinxton Football Club were unavailable for comment about the abuse allegations.
